Where SuperCapture differs

Capture, edit and share without switching views. A new capture lands in your library, and you mark it up and share it from the same window you find it in. Snagit opens each capture in its editor and keeps older ones in a separate Library.

Your screenshots stay standard files. A marked-up screenshot is saved as an ordinary PNG, with its annotations stored inside the file, so it opens in any app and stays editable when you bring it back to SuperCapture. Snagit keeps edited captures in its own .snagx format, which only Snagit opens; everywhere else needs an exported copy.

Shared folders for team work. Marketing, support and product teams share whole folders of captures with colleagues and collaborators. A new screenshot or recording filed into a shared folder syncs to everyone in it, stays searchable by its text, and can be commented on in one place. With Pro for teams, your organization gets its own library: switch to it and every capture you take is filed there, and admins manage members from the web.

Every capture is searchable, as soon as you take it. OCR runs on each capture on your Mac, and a local model tags it, so you can find an old screenshot by an error code or a merchant name, or narrow by tag, type or color. Every capture named for what’s in it. AI Rename looks at each new screenshot, recording and import on your Mac and names the file for its content, so a folder reads like a list of what’s in it, not a column of timestamps. Names follow a template you can edit in Settings, so every file can start with the date, a project prefix or whatever your team uses, with the AI’s description filling in the rest. AI Rename needs macOS 27 or later; the template works everywhere.

Work on many captures at once. Select a group of captures and act on all of them together: tag them, rename them with a name pattern, drag them into a folder, share or copy them, combine them into a slide deck, or move them to the Trash. Search narrows the library to exactly the set you want first, so reorganizing a project’s worth of screenshots takes seconds.

The video editor is included. Recordings open in an editor with automatic zoom on each click, cursor smoothing, click highlights, trimming, keyframed annotations and backgrounds. On-device transcription turns the mic track into captions. The webcam is recorded as its own track, so you can move it or restyle it after you stop. In Snagit, a recording can only be trimmed; zoom, captions and real editing mean upgrading to Camtasia, from $179.88 a year.

Redaction that finds secrets. Auto Redact looks for developer secrets as well as personal details: API keys and tokens from common services, passwords, private keys and connection strings. The default redaction mode shuffles and averages the pixels, so nothing recoverable is left in the exported image.

Bookmarks you can read offline. Save a web page from the browser extension and SuperCapture keeps its article text alongside a picture of it, and on Reddit, Hacker News and Discourse forums, the post and its comment thread too. Reader mode shows them as clean, readable pages, stored on your Mac, so they’re there offline and searchable with the rest of your library.

Browser extensions. The Safari, Chrome, Brave and Firefox extensions capture a full web page by scrolling and stitching it, and step through web slide decks into a multi-page document. Get the extensions.

Zero-knowledge encryption and automation. On Pro, capture files in sync and shared folders are encrypted on your Mac before upload. A local MCP server lets AI agents search, tag, annotate, record and export. Read the security overview.

When Snagit might fit instead

• You work on Windows too. Snagit runs on Mac and Windows under one license today. SuperCapture’s Windows version is still in development.
• You write step-by-step guides. AI Step Capture records a process as you click through it and exports it to Word, PowerPoint, HTML or Camtasia.

Switching tips

1. Export your Snagit captures as images. SuperCapture doesn’t open .snagx files, so save the ones you want to keep as PNGs first. They come in flattened, and SuperCapture reads the text in them.
2. Link that folder. SuperCapture can link an external folder and index it in place, so older captures show up in the gallery beside new ones. It doesn’t move or rewrite the original files.
3. Install a browser extension if you capture long web pages or slide decks. Get the extensions.
4. Start on the free plan. Free includes the full capture, editing and search toolkit. Videos and edited images carry a light “Made with SuperCapture” mark. Unedited screenshots export clean. Compare plans.
